We’re helpnig Science Cheerleader with a survey to learn more about our readers.
In an effort to learn more about the fascinating and growing demography of people known as Citizen Scientists (you! water monitors, butterfly taggers, star gazers, weather trackers, bird watchers, etc), the following online survey has been created:

Discussion Group for Citizen Science

Here’s a new discussion group for citizen science practitioners and organizers alike. I’m hoping it will foster communication between all the various types of individuals: volunteers, administrators, and professional scientists. And I hope you’ll join and post your opinions, questions, and ideas!

Site Updates (and a question about naming)

Hello! As you can see, I’m in the middle of migrating the CitizenSci.com site, so it’s looking quite different. In the background, I’m changing the software used to manage the site (from Movable Type to WordPress, if you’re interested).
I’ll be adjusting the site’s design over the next few days…it won’t look like this!

The Unintended Consequences of Citizen Science

I’m interested in gathering stories about the unintended consequences of citizen science…stories that show why participating in these projects has value beyond the data.
I touched on some of this in the poster I did for the recent citizen science conference. What kind of unintended consequences could I be talking about? Try:

Curing depression
Teaching critical [...]

Last Grownup in the Woods: Lessons From MAKE

I’m here in Ithaca to attend the Citizen Science Toolkit Conference hosted by the venerable Cornell Lab of Ornithology. In just a couple of hours, I’ll be heading over to the lab and getting a chance to visit Sapsucker Woods for the first time. I’m really excited!
As part of the conference, I’m presenting [...]

New Social Network for Citizen Scientists

I’m happy to announce a new social network for citizen scientists using Crowd Vine, social networking software created by my friend, Tony Stubblebine.
It’s my hope that the social network will be a tool for people to get visability as a community of citizen science enthusiasts, regardless of the projects they participate in.
To join the community, [...]

Citizen Science Flickr Pool

I’ve been working on some community features for the CitizenSci.com web site, and here’s the first one: the Citizen Science Projects Flickr pool! Add your photos to the pool so we can check out your projects or see you and your fellow citizen scientists in action. We’ll be adding a feature to this [...]

Resources for Educators

Recently I’ve gotten two questions from educators who would like to get involved with citizen science projects or environmental web sites. I thought I’d post them here and ask for recommendations from readers.
The first question comes from Christopher:
I am an environmental educator in Seattle, WA, and I am very interested in starting a [...]

Citizen Science at the Maker Faire

If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, be sure to check out the Maker Faire on April 22 and 23 in San Mateo (near SFO). We’re even putting together a special area for citizen science — see the program listing for details.
One of the highlights will be a workshop given by the [...]

About this weblog

“Citizen Scientists” are people who conduct volunteer scientific research without formal credentials. The data gathered and reported by citizen scientists is used by professional scientists and is typically available to the public. Anyone with an interest can be a citizen scientist; the complexity ranges from making and reporting simple observations with the naked [...]
